uhhhh okay I guess I’m gonna talk about this scene a little bit? Because a handful of people now have been like, “it’s partially juts Lydia manipulating Stiles,” which is a v reasonable assumption based on her character but is not at all supported by the way they play it, specifically the way Lydia leaps out of the trap and into Stiles’ arms and then looks at his mouth for a while. (Don’t blame u, girl! Would do the exaaact same thing given the chance.) But. Nothing about her physicality or their interaction undercuts her gross hero-worship damsel in distress bullshit lines— like, since WHEN is Lydia Martin spending a lot of time admiring Stiles’ or anyone’s cleverness? Also the solution he comes up with has almost nothing to do with “figuring it out” and more with “spend thirty more seconds looking at the thing.”
I was ready to be on board for Stiles/Lydia in canon, you guys. Especially as he loses his damn mind, and Lydia is THE ONE PERSON who can be like “oh, been there! It’s scary as shit, huh. Especially when you prize your mind pretty highly.” But this vulnerable caretaker, praising him through his difficulties, honestly makes my skin crawl. Give me: Lydia sassing Stiles into concentrating. Give me Lydia laying it on thick and then stepping neatly out of the trap and tossing her hair. Give me Lydia reminding Stiles that he once told her that she was smarter than anyone knew, and that he was okay, brain-wise, and so they would figure it out together.
They could have played this scene in approx. a hundred different ways and it would have been awesome, and I would have walked away being like, yep, weirdly still on board with it. Instead they went a lazy route, making Lydia vulnerable to force a moment of adrenalized closeness (aka the development of Allison and Isaac’s entire relationship). She could be anyone in this scene, that’s the thing, really— Allison could have delivered those lines more effectively, actually, I think, or Scott, or even Derek or Isaac. (Imagine them gritting out the praise, pained, ugh okay Stiles you’re very smart, FOCUS and get me OUT of here).
It’s not about Lydia and Stiles at all: it’s about a girl’s body being in danger, and a boy’s big agile brain getting her out of it, and how grateful she is, how stupidly, thoroughly grateful she has to be. It feels like they’re making Lydia submit, making her admit she was wrong about Stiles all along. They’re making her lovable by making her soft. And if they keep doing it, I will have to stop watching the show.
